Tuesday July 15 in Guangxi Province, Qinzhou City erupted as thousands of workers demonstrated in the square in front of the city government headquarters. According to the workers' representative, this morning workers from more than 20 work units collectively went to the municipal government headquarters and demanded that the city's leaders come out to meet them. The representative stated that these workers are from more than 20 factories that have still not resolved problems 15 years after the factories changed from public to private ownership. Recently the central government strictly ordered that local governments and departments must prevent people going to the capital to petition for redress of grievances. Today the workers organized and the thousands of workers from more than 20 factories succeeded in gathering in the square in front of the city government and demanded that the government leaders attend their petition activity. The worker representative emphasized that this was not a protest demonstration, but instead a gathering in front of the municipal government in order to appeal to the city government leaders to come out and address and resolve the workers' problems stemming from changes in ownership of their work units that have been outstanding for more than a decade.
