Yang Jia Shanghai Police Murder Conviction Appeal Being Heard, Crowd of
Petitioners Shout Angry Words About Their Houses Being Ransacked and
Their Illegally Detentions
According to reliable sources, on the evening of Thursday October 16
Shanghai police were on high alert, paying special attention to
petitioners shouting slogans regarding the cases of fellow petitioners
Zhang Cuiping, Xi Rendi, and others who were summoned to court for
interrogation and have not been heard from since.
In other news, Shanghai rights activist Du Yangming was unjustly
sentenced in Shanghai's Zhabei District to two and a half years for
urinating in the city's greenbelt. He was due to be released on
December 1, but in recent days the jail has used all kinds of malicious
means, getting other prisoners to beat Du Yangming and otherwise harass
him. On Wednesday October 15, Du Yangming's wife went to visit him at
the jail and saw that her husband was in very low spirits. Du Yangming
stated: "I am being persecuted in prison, I don't know if I will
survive this persecution. If I do survive, I may suffer the same fate
as Chen Xiaoming [ed. note: Chen Xiaoming was a legal rights promoter
who fought forced evictions in Shanghai and was jailed for two years
and died shortly after being released on medical parole. Chen died of a
hemorrhage after being moved from jail to a civilian hospital on July
1, 2007]. For this reason Du Yangming's family is beseeching the media
to pay attention to this violation of his rights and make sure that his
case is handled according to proper legal procedure.
