Wuxi, Jiangsu Province Forcibly Razes Newspaper Stands for World Buddhist Forum
by Xiao Xiang
China Free Press via Boxun reports that Jiangsu Province's Wuxi City
has forcibly demolished 1,702 newspaper stands in preparation for
hosting this month's World Buddhist Forum. National media like the
China Youth Daily newspaper have reported this news, but Jiangsu
Communist Party Standing Committee member and Wuxi Communist Party
General Secretary Yang Weize irresponsibly stated during a press
conference that "None of the periodical stands have been forcibly
demolished, the owners dismantled them themselves."
But in independent investigations media organs found that this was
untrue, and that city forklifts, trucks, and cranes had been used to
forcibly remove the structures. Why must government officials lie about
their actions?
The World Buddhist Forum will be held from Saturday March 28-Wednesday
April 1. In order to present a false appearance of an uncluttered city
atmosphere, the Party leaders ordered the stands removed, not
adequately taking into account the convenience of its people.
On Saturday March 21 Xinhua Net and Peoples Net websites both posted an
article entitled "Wuxi Party Secretary Yang Weize Reflects on His
Reflection." The article criticized Yang for abusing his authority and
then feigning regret, making the excuse that he ordered that no
newspaper stands be forcibly demolished but that local officials
misinterpreted his wishes. The article sarcastically questioned this
version of events. But the article was quickly removed from the
websites.
