(Video) US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Speaks at Tsinghua University, Dozens of Petitioners Detained

Boxun reports that on Thursday May 28 U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi speech at Beijing's Tsinghua University was marred by the detention of dozens of petitioners attempting to see the American politician who is known for championing the cause of human rights in China. Petitioners who have been protesting throughout her five day trip boarded a bus early in the morning from south Beijing for the two hour ride to the university district. More than 300 protesters attempted to reach Tsinghua University's west gate, but were prevented from doing so by a phalanx of more than 100 police.

By 3 p.m. 61 petitioners were being held at the nearby Yuanmingyuan police station. They were forced to sign confessions, but not sent to the central petitioner detention center at Majialou.

This was a far cry from the Wednesday May 27 successful large-scale petitioner protest in front of the State Council's News Office.
