Three Prominent Intellectuals Accused by Politburo Standing Committee Member of "Launching an Attack" Against the Communist Party

Boxun reports that three extremely influential public intellectuals have been accused by a Communist Party Politburo Standing Committee member of "launching an attack" against the Party for their participation in the creation and dissemination of the Charter 08 petition. The three are playwright and social critic Sha Yexin, philosopher and political activist Xu Youyu and renowned liberal scholar and reform activist Liu Junning.

If they refuse professional reassignment, the Politburo member says, they face being expelled from their professional posts. This is the most serious threat against the independence of thought of public intellectuals in the lead up to the 20th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square student protests and subsequent military crackdown.
