Southern Metropolis Daily Newspaper "Commentary Weekly" Section Shut Down by Authorities
by Xiao Xiong

In a sign of Guangdong Province's media censorship campaign increasing in intensity, groundbreaking newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily Sunday December 14 stopped publishing its eight-month-old weekly supplement "Commentary Weekly." That section of the newspaper has been reconfigured as "Reading and Reflecting."

In response to a spring 2008 order to reduce by half its news commentary, Southern Metropolis Daily launched the Commentary Weekly supplement that came out every Sunday and took a macrolevel approach to social issues. But even this compromise the authorities could not accept.

Today's Southern Metropolis Daily contained no explanation or apology for the change. This development is believed connected to the recent purging of editor Jiang Yiping.
