by Ding Sheng It is widely known that North Korea has the ability to counterfeit virtually undetectable US dollar and Japanese yen "superbills." What is less well known is that the hermit kingdom has begun producing very high-quality counterfeit 100 yuan renminbi bills, and is using this capability to threaten China against cooperating with United Nations Security Council sanctions against the Kim Jong-il regime. According to an official Chinese government source, the State Council recently convened an anti-counterfeiting work meeting in Beijing to discuss how to confront this dangerous new threat. At first Chinese authorities suspected Taiwan of being the source of the high-tech fake bills, but it has become increasingly evident that the source of the counterfeit currency is China's porous northeast border with its neighbor and longtime ally North Korea. This is a vexing dilemma for China. If Beijing cooperates with the U.S. in sanctioning Pyongyang, China's dream of the yuan becoming the dominant currency in Asia and the PRC's financial security could be threatened by a flood of counterfeit bills. But if the Hu regime gives in to North Korea's counterfeit currency blackmail and continues to supply Kim Jong-il's rogue regime with food, fuel and nuclear and long-range missile technology, Japan may abandon its peace constitution and go nuclear, thereby upsetting the balance of power in Asia.
