North Korea Confirms Detention of Two Female American Journalists
Boxun reports that North Korea's government has
confirmed arresting two female American journalists for illegally
entering North Korean territory.
According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), two female
American journalists were detained last week by North Korean soldiers
on the border with China for entering Democratic Peoples Republic of
Korea (DPRK) territory illegally. The news agency said that the case is
still under investigation.
One of the female journalists is Chinese American and the other is
Korean American. They were apparently researching North Korean refugees
fleeing the DPRK for China and were filming DPRK soldiers patrolling
the border. When the women did not respond to warnings to stop filming,
they were detained.
South Korean reports claim that the women were on the Chinese side of
the Tumen River border when they were seized. This would violate
Chinese law.
The women were reporting for former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore's Internet-based Current TV website.
According to the U.S. State Department, Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton is actively investigating the circumstances behind the arrest
of the two women.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang states that the Chinese side is investigating the case.
