Ministry of State Security Warns of Online Preparations for a June 4 Demonstration in Support of Deng Yujiao
Boxun reports that on Monday May 25 China's Ministry of State Security (MSS) reported to Communist Party, government, and military leaders in an intelligence briefing that there is a growing online effort to organize protests on June 4 in support of Deng Yujiao, the brothel laundress who is accused of murdering a corrupt Communist Party official who attempted to sexually assault her. The organizers reportedly do not rule out gathering in Tiananmen Square, the site of large-scale student protests and a subsequent military massacre 20 years ago.
The intelligence report recommends that the Deng Yujiao case be resolved quickly and quietly so as not to give anti-China forces a hot-button issue around which to organize opposition to the regime.
Although this intelligence is just advisory, it reflects the State Security Ministry's concern with the legal system's mishandling of recent cases, including that of Yang Jia, the street peddler who in response to mistreatment by police killed six police officers and was put to death early this year. Most feel that Deng Yujiao's case should have taken into account that she was defending herself and that she should have been charged with the lesser crime of manslaughter rather than first-degree murder. This more serious charge is a result of the incompetence of local propaganda and public security organs who are prioritizing their own short-term interests. A State Security deputy minister said: "What if there are large-scale protests in support of Deng Yujiao on June 4? Who will be responsible?"
The Ministry of State Security normally does not involve itself in domestic legal cases, but in this instance the Deng Yujiao case coincides with the sensitive Tiananmen Massacre anniversary and therefore attracts the MSS's concern.
