Imprisoned Writers Du Daobin and Lü Gengsong Barred From Reading, Writing to Outsiders
by Cang Hai

Chinese New Year is traditionally the time for Chinese families to gather for annual reunions. But this long-standing privilege is denied to the families of those imprisoned, and is especially painful for prisoners of conscience and their families. Two such examples are the cases of writers Du Daobin and Lü Gengsong.

Hubei Province writer Du Daobin was taken away from his workplace by police on July 21, 2008 and brought to Hubei Province, Wuhan City's West Han River Prison. This seemed to indicate that he had violated his parole and that his suspended sentence was therefore being enforced, but until now his wife Xia Chunrong has not received any documentation regarding this critical status change. He is not permitted to read or write, and is only permitted one visit per month. Whenever an attempt is made to discuss the circumstances of the case, the prison guard rudely interrupts. Du is depressed at his circumstances, and very much misses his young son. Since the Beijing Olympics, Xia has been warned repeatedly not to discuss the case with outsiders. There are also police posted at her apartment door non-stop. There are many similar cases involving dissidents. This leads her to believe that there are unorthodox aspects to this case and that she should not expect to see any documentation.

Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou City writer Lü Gengsong was convicted of inciting subversion of State rule and on February 5, 2008 was sentenced to four years in prison. Since his imprisonment, visits from his wife Wang Xue'e and family have been treated with much more severe oversight than that accorded the other prisoners. Lü also cannot send letters, and those that he receives are opened by the prison authorities. Wang Xue'e expresses gratitude to those who have showed concern for her husband and family, and reassures that she and her family will stoically endure this ordeal.
