Exclusive News: Propaganda Meeting Focuses on New Efforts to Control Content of Chinese Language Websites at Home and Abroad

Boxun reports that at a Monday October 20 propaganda apparatus meeting, a Central Propaganda Department official revealed aspects of a "three-year plan for managing the internet." One focus will be the controlling and managing of domestic websites to be carried out jointly by the Central Propaganda Department, the State Council Information Office and the Ministry of Public Security. One goal is to decrease the interactive content involving average netizens on the home pages of major online media. The goal, according to the official, is to bring the Chinese-language internet more in line with the ideology and level of official control represented by print media in China.

But the meeting also recognized that the Internet has turned into a powerful popular force against official corruption. According to statistics, 87 percent
