Chinese Internet Authorities Suspend "Rule of Law" (Fa Tian Xia) Legal Blog For Sensitive Content
by Zan Aizong
Beijing authorities on Tuesday December 16 blocked lively legal weblog
"Rule of Law" (fatianxia.com) due to its excessive amount of sensitive
content, including publishing the controversial recent "Charter 08"
calling on the Chinese government to increase popular participation in
political decisionmaking, increased accountability and transparency to
combat official corruption, and the ratcheting up of rule by law rather
than by individual political leader dictate.
The weblog's network connection is already out of service. The editor
of the blog states that the website's ideal is for "the rule of law to
take root, and make China think." It allows controversial views to be
aired as long as they are within the scope of constitutionally
protected free speech, but it was still unable to avoid official
censorship. On the blog's web page there is now an announcement: "Due
to an excess of content inconsistent with government policies, from the
morning of December 16 2008 this website's service has been suspended."
