U.S. Corporation Skype Apologizes For Chinese Partner's Privacy Infringements
October 3, 2008
U.S. internet communication company Skype apologized for its Chinese partner's storing and monitoring of text messages. The text messages were deemed sensitive by Beijing authorities.
Skype is a company that provides Internet text messaging and telephone services. Skype on Thursday October 2 admitted that its Chinese joint venture partner Tom Inc. had, without customers' knowledge, stored and monitored sensitive text messages and chat session records. These chat records and individual customer details were stored on web servers that could be accessed publicly.
Skype said that in 2006 it learned that the Chinese government was requiring that Chinese language filtering software be used in its Chinese service. But Skype said that it did not learn until Wednesday evening that its Chinese partner had altered the online monitoring software, and that without the U.S. parents' knowledge began storing and surveilling text and chat records. On Thursday Skype made an announcement that at its insistence these practices violating customer security had been discontinued.
