by Du Zhizhong When one escapes death, one must bear witness. I want to bear witness on that terrifying time. I live in a county town (now it is part of the city), Guantianba Village. During the Great Leap Forward in 1959 it was called Chengguan Commune Number Four Production Team. In 1957, following the "Anti-Rightist Campaign," the Great Leap Forward was initiated, with the whole country rushing headlong toward implementing pure communism. At that time people did not have any regular routine farming or working. Each individual family became part of a production team's extended family. All household furniture was concentrated in the communal cafeteria. If it could be used it was kept, if it could not it was burned in backyard smelting furnaces. All metal items excepting sickles and hoes, and including metal studs on doors and decorative ornaments on trunks were used to make homemade steel. © Copyright 2008 by Boxun News Top of Page |
