Hubei Province Writer Deng Fuhua Punished for Persistently Exposing Official Corruption
by Radio Free Asia Hong Kong Reporter Xin Yu

Hubei Province writer Deng Fuhua has been targeted and punished by authorities for his persistent investigation and exposure of official corruption. The local government has not only tightly censored his ability to continue to publish, but has confiscated Deng Fuhua's official writer credential cards and during the Olympics confined him to a hospital, not permitting him to leave for 70 days.

Deng Fuhua has long devoted himself to publishing reportage and satirical literature exposing the corrupt acts of government officials. For this he has been subjected to tremendous repression by local government. According to recent reports, because Deng Fuhua incurred the wrath of a small group of corrupt local officials in the Hubei Province city of Shiyan, the authorities exacted vengeance on him by bugging his landline telephone and cellular telephone; requiring him to notify authorities before leaving Shiyan city; and confiscating his professional writing credentials including his China Reportage Literature Association card, Hubei Writer's Association and Wuhan City Writer's Association cards, Reportage Literature Interview card, China Writer's Magazine professional contractual writer card and as of this date still not returning them.

On Tuesday October 7 in an interview with Deng Fuhua, he said that after the Beijing Olympics were over all his outside contacts were strictly controlled: "My telephone was bugged, and internet activity restricted. The authorities clearly informed me that they were monitoring me, and anyone who called me was immediately investigated; what relationship did they have with me, how did they know me, what were they calling me about, etc. They asked these kinds of questions."

Deng Fuhua also described the authorities wrongfully detaining him in the hospital: "Because of this stress I was having trouble sleeping, and was diagnosed with depression. It was recommended that I convalesce for a while, but then the authorities intervened and would not let me leave the hospital while the Beijing Olympics were taking place. I was forced to remain in the hospital until August 26, having stayed there for a total of 70 days, in complete isolation. It was no different than being under house arrest."

When this reporter contacted the Shiyan City Public Security Bureau, the police spokesperson said: "Everything you describe is complete fiction. The real facts have already been described by the Provinicial Communist Party Committee and Provincial Government. You should not listen to the fabrications of others."

Reporter: "Have people who have been in contact with Deng Fuhua been interrogated by you?"

Police Spokesperson: "Who are you?"

Reporter: "I am a Hong Kong reporter."

Police Spokesperson: "We have a propaganda bureau. Please contact them."

This reporter called the number, but the person who answered said that they were new and unclear about the case, and provided a different number, but that went unanswered.

Because the police would not provide information regarding whether Deng Fuhua's friends were still being questioned, this reporter called one such person surnamed Cui.

Cui: "I know Deng Fuhua."

Reporter: "Were you interrogated by authorities after contacting Mr. Deng Fuhua?"

Cui: "Yes I was."

In addition, in June Deng Fuhua and other members of the Hubei Province Shiyan City Democratic National Construction Association of the Communist Party-controlled Democratic National Construction Party jointly petitioned the Provincial Communist Party Committee regarding problems in the municipal organization, with a power struggle for leadership taking place. The petition was forwarded to the Shiyan Municipal Communist Party United Front Department. The United Front Department Director Fu Guoxi severely criticized the petitioners, informing that this was a "serious political incident" and that the petitioners would be held responsible. After this Deng Fuhua's party membership was revoked.
